Meet The Newly Promoted German Bundesliga Teams For The 2022/23 Season

Schalke 04 won the 2. Bundesliga to secure an instant promotion back to the top flight after getting relegated in 2020/21.

The 2021/22 German Bundesliga season ended with Bayern Munich winning the title for the 10th consecutive season. Arminia Bielefeld and
Greuther Fürth got relegated while Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen are the newly promoted teams for the 2022/23 season.

Only 18 teams compete in the Bundesliga. Two teams will be automatically relegated and two teams will secure automatic promotion. While the play-off will be played between the team that finished in 18th place in the first division and the team that finished 3rd in the second division.

For this year’s play-off, the 18th team in the Bundesliga (Hertha Berlin) defeated the 3rd-placed team in the 2. Bundesliga (Humburger), thus, only two teams got promoted to the top flight.

The 2022/23 Bundesliga will be the 60th season of the Germany top flight. It will begin on the 5th of August 2022 and will be concluded on the 27th of May 2023.

Due to the climatic conditions of the host country Qatar, the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be held between the 21st of November and the 18th of December 2022, hence, the Bundesliga will feature an extended pause during the season.

National team players will be released by their clubs on the 14th of November 2022, thus, the last Bundesliga matchday before the break is scheduled from 11th to 13th of November (matchday 15). The league will resume ten weeks later on the 20th of January 2023.

Schalke 04

Schalke 04 won the 2. Bundesliga to secure an instant promotion back to the top flight after getting relegated in 2020/21.

Fully known as Fußballclub Gelsenkirchen-Schalke 04 e. V., it is from the Schalke district of Gelsenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia. It was founded in 1904 (118 years ago). The “04” in the club’s name derives from its formation in 1904.

The club is nicknamed Die Königsblauen (The Royal Blues) and plays its home matches at the 62,271 capacity Veltins-Arena.

Schalke 04 is one of the biggest football clubs in Germany. In terms of membership, it is the second-largest football club in Germany and the third-largest club in the world.

Schalke have won 7 Bundesliga titles, 5 DFB-Pokals, 1 DFL-Supercup, 1 UEFA Cup (Europa League) and 2 UEFA Intertoto Cups.

In 1937, Schalke became the first German club to win the double.

They got relegated from the Bundesliga in 2021 (first time in 33 years).

Schalke instantly secured promotion back to the top flight by winning the 2. Bundesliga in 2022.

Their fiercest rivals are Ruhr neighbours Borussia Dortmund. The derby match between Schalke 04 and Dortmund is known as the Revierderby.

Schalke 04’s best players are: Simon Terodde, Marius Bulter, Marcin Kaminski, Kou Itakura, Rodrigo Zalazar and Thomas Ouwejan.

Werder Bremen

Werder Bremen gained automatic promotion to the Bundesliga after finishing as runners-up in the 2nd division.

Fully known as Sportverein Werder Bremen von 1899 e. V, it is based in Bremen, Germany and was founded in 1899 (123 years ago).

The club’s nickname is Die Werderaner (The River Islanders) and plays its home games at the 42,100 capacity Weserstadion. The President is Hubertus Hess-Grunewald while the manager is Ole Werner.

Werder have won 4 Bundesliga titles, 6 DFB-Pokals, 1 DFL-Ligapokal, 3 DFL-Supercup, and 1 European Cup Winners’ Cup.


They were runners-up in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup, losing to Shakhtar Donetsk in the final.

Bremen finished 17th in the 2020/21 season and — for the 2nd time in their history — got relegated to the 2. Bundesliga. Prior to their relegation, they have been in the top flight since 1980 (41 years)

Werder Bremen finished as runners-up in the 2. Bundesliga in 2021/22 and won immediate promotion back to the Bundesliga after just one season.

Their fiercest rivals are fellow northern German club, Hamburger — with whom the contest the Nordderby (North derby).

Bremen’s best players are: Marvin Ducksch, Niclas Füllkrug, Marco Friedl, Romano Schmid and Christian Gross.
