Meet Real Madrid’s New €100m Signing: Aurélien Tchouaméni

Tchouaméni made a meteoric rise to prominence to become one of the hottest youngsters in the world of football.

Real Madrid have announced the signing of Aurélien Tchouaméni from Monaco. The 22-year-old defensive midfielder will join Real in a deal worth €100 million (£85m/$107m), on a six-year contract.

To secure Tchouaméni’s signing, Madrid won a hard-fought transfer battle against PSG and Liverpool.

Here, FootballOrbit brings you what you need to know about the French international.

Aurélien Djani Tchouaméni was born on the 27th of January 2000 in Rouen, France.

He began his football career very early, joining his neighbourhood academy, SJ D’Artigues, at the age of 6.

In 2011, he joined Bordeaux aged eleven.

In July 2018, Tchouaméni made his professional debut for the Bordeaux senior team — aged just 18 — and scored his first career goal a month later.

He joined Monaco in the 2020 January transfer window for a fee of about €18 million (£15.5m/$22m) on a four and half year deal.

At Monaco, Tchouaméni showed he belongs to the very top with sterling performances that belies his young age. He made a meteoric rise to prominence to become one of the hottest youngsters in the world of football.

His performances attracted the top clubs and it was about a question of when will he leave Monaco, not if.

On the 11th of June 2022, it was announced that Tchouaméni will officially join Spanish giants and European champions, Real Madrid, on a 6-year contract. The transfer fee is €80 million, which would rise to €100 million due to additional fees.

He will earn around £150,000-a-week at Real Madrid.

International career

Although Tchouaméni is of Cameroonian descent, he opted to play for France at international level.

On the 1st of September 2021, he made his international debut for France in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying game against Bosnia and Herzegovina and on the 25th of March 2022, Tchouaméni scored his first goal for the national team in a friendly match against Ivory Coast.

He is expected to be part of France’s squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year.

Achievements so far

Despite being just 22, Tchouaméni has already made over 100 senior career appearances and won the UEFA Nations League with France in 2021.

He won the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year in 2020/21 and was named in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year in both 2020/21 and 2021/22.

In 2021/22, Tchouaméni made 50 appearances in all competitions and scored 5 goals while also providing 3 assists, despite being a defensive midfielder.

Playing style

Aurélien Tchouaméni is a very physical player who REALLY loves making tackles. He also has the ability to control games from his position as a defensive midfielder and set the tempo for his team.

He also loves driving the ball forward from the back too, allowing him to dictate the offensive flow of a match and makes brilliant through-balls— this has made some observers to describe him as a combination of N’Golo Kante and Paul Pogba.

At Real Madrid, Tchouaméni is seen as the perfect replacement for the ageing Casemiro. His arrival at the Bernabeu completes Madrid’s mission to sign three midfielders who can step into the shoes of the legendary trio of Luka Modric (36) Toni Kroos (32) and Casemiro (30) in the future.

Real seem to have found capable replacements for the veterans in Tchouameni (22), Fede Valverde (23) and Eduardo Camavinga (19).

What do you think of Aurélien Tchouaméni’s arrival at Real Madrid?
